Careful Packing ...

Making sure you have prepared yourself, your home and your luggage is as important as booking the right hotel. Use this simple, easy to use guide and you'll have no last minute worries.

Preparation Guide ...

Don't rush off to the airport without first protecting your home to the best of your ability. The last thing you want to add to your post holiday blues is returning to a burgled house. We'll help you to prevent this, and also offer advice on other home 'bits and bobs' you might have forgotten about likely home security tips, packing tips and luggage allowances.

Almost half of all break-ins happen when a flat or house is left empty so protect your home as much as you can. First of all, here's some things you should think about taking care of:
  • Cancel any deliveries that could show that you are not home i.e. milk and newspapers

  • Don't order any items that will be sent Recorded Deliver - after a week they will be returned, by the Post Office, to the sender. Another sign you are not home

  • Change meetings that are due when you will be away

  • Get a friend or neighbour to collect post from your doorstep and water your plants

  • Don't leave any perishable items in your fridge to go off

  • Turn off all plug sockets to save yourself money and energy

  • In the Summer turn off your central heating and hot water. In the Winter set the temperature on your heating and water to very low, but don't turn off in case of a hard frost that could damage your pipe work

  • Arrange for your pets to be well looked after -with by animal loving friends, making sure they meet properly first, or in a cattery or kennel, packing their favourite toys and treats

Home Security Top Tips ...

Secure your home as best you can before departing Edinburgh Airport with this Top Ten Home Security Tips guide.

When our home and its contents are our most valuable possessions - and the huge sentimental value we attach to them - we need to take as many precautions as possible to protect it.

These Top Ten Home Security Tips are easy and simple to do:

  Top Ten Security Tips
1, Automatic Lighting Confuse any wanna-be burglars by setting some of your lights on automatic timers that go on and off at different times of the day.
  2. Post Arrange for friends or family to clear away any post, free newspapers, mail etc. - that has built up on your doorstep, otherwise it's a real sign you aren't home.

Or use Royal Mail's Keepsafe service that stores your post for up to two months.

3. Deliveries Another real give-away you aren't home - built up milk and paper deliveries - cancel them.
4. Baggage Tags: Leave writing your home address on your luggage label until you are checking in for your return flight. Otherwise it tells everyone that you are going on holiday and that you are away for a week or two.
5. House Checking:

Ask friends or family to pop in and check on your house from time to time. It will confuse anyone monitoring your home.

Also get said friends or family to park on your drive (even ask a neighbour to park a second car on your drive the whole time you are away). Also get them to close and pull curtains each time they visit.

It's always best to leave your holiday contact details with family, friends or neighbours so that they can contact you in case of an emergency.

6. Neighbourhood Watch: Think about joining a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme in your area.  Visit their website at www.neighbourhoodwatch.net to find out more.
7. Valuable Items:

Rather than leave valuable items and important documents at home ask if trusted family or friends will look after them. Or, ask your Bank to lock them in their safe.

Keep valuable goods like televisions, stereos and DVD players out of view from the windows as these can be very tempting.

Make sure, before you travel, that your home and contents insurance is in order.

8. Alarm:

Ask a friend or neighbour to be a key holder while you're away, should the Security Company need to contact anyone in emergency.

And of course, make sure your alarm is set when you leave your property.

9. Outdoor Storage: Expensive power tools, mountain bikes and golf clubs could be stored inside rather than in the shed or garage whilst you are away.
10. Locks: Check all your external doors and windows to see that they are shut and locked tight.

Some police forces will come out to inspect your home security, they will also offer other security tips to help protect your home - for extra peace of mind give them a call.

Top Packing Tips & Luggage Allowances ...

Prepare your luggage correctly and avoid any timely delays or embarrassment at check-in by following this simple guide on luggage allowances and top packing tips.

All airlines have weight restrictions on luggage - whilst these vary from airline to airline, but in most instances the luggage allowance is 70lbs, however the weight limit for your luggage allowances will be printed on the ticket.

If for any reason you're needing to travel with a large amount of luggage contact your airline with regard to their policies on additional luggage. Likewise, if you are travelling with outsized or large luggage, do contact the airline in advance of travel. Failure to do so could result in you needing to discard excess luggage or you'll be charged a hefty fine to travel.

At check-in you'll be asked a range of questions by the Ground Hostess. These security questions -as directed by the British Government - will include whether you have packed your own luggage, if anyone has asked you to carry something for them, or added something to your luggage.

A detailed listing of prohibited and restricted items that must not be packed in your hand luggage or main luggage can be found in the Security section of this website
