Travel Tips ...

Airports Information have prepared the following information to help passengers flying from Edinburgh Airport. It covers areas such as airport parking, staying comfortable during the flight and general travel hints and guidelines.

Getting to Edinburgh Airport ...

Located west of Edinburgh city, the main airport car park can be found in front of the main terminal building. It offers short and long stay car parking.

Visit the ‘Getting to the Airport’ section in this Information Guide for more information on travelling to Edinburgh by:

Edinburgh Airport Parking ...

Choose from a selection of airport parking at Edinburgh Airport - whether your choice depends on the level of service required, budget or length of stay.

The short stay car park is recommended for persons collecting or dropping off passengers, or for short duration trips.

Passengers travelling away for longer than a few days have a choice of two long stay parking options.

The long stay car park requires a transfer to the airport Terminal by bus. Or there is meet and greet valet parking where you drive straight to the airport Terminal and your car is taken to a secure car park.

Valet meet and greet parking is available at Edinburgh Airport and means you do not need to worry about a transfer from the car park to the Terminal so it's a hassle free start, and finish, to your holiday.

Simply leave your car at a pre-arranged time right outside the airport Terminal with the meet and greet Rep, before moving quickly to check in.

The vehicle will be stored in a secure parking compound and then delivered back to you at the terminal on your return.

The hugely convenient valet meet and greet parking is perfect for people travelling with disabilities or special needs, families with small children, corporate travellers or people with heavy bags or sports equipment.

Expect to pay around £83 for one week and £118 for two weeks, depending on the operator you choose. Although pre-booking valet parking is advised to ensure availability.  To book visit www.helpmetravel.co.uk.

Fast Track parking is also available from Edinburgh Airport.  Located within the short stay car park, it offers a quick link into the terminal.  Prices start from £11.00 for 24 hours or part thereof.

Airport Arrival ...

With security having increased considerably recently, so has the length of time that it takes to check-in.

Therefore proceed straight to check-in when your arrive at the airport. This means you can check-in for your flight, unload your baggage so that it can be loaded onto the Aircraft, leaving your free to enjoy the airport's facilities.

It is vitally important to arrive at the Airport in good time before your flight:

Type Of Flight Check In Time
Long Haul Flights 3 HOURS before departure
European Flights 2 HOURS before departure
UK & Northern Ireland Flights 1 HOUR before departure

Having arrived at the airport, keep your luggage with you at all times. Do not let anyone else carry your bags for you. This applies to both main baggage and hand luggage.

Likewise, never look after another passengers luggage whilst at the Airport. Under no circumstances should you carry anything else onto the Aircraft for another passenger.

Alert a member of staff at the Airport if you see anything of concern or notice any unattended packages.

The boarding gate that you will need to be at to board the aircraft will be displayed on screens in the departure lounge. Do keep checking to see what boarding gate you need to be at, and prepare to leave for the gate in good time. In some Airports it can take up to 30 minutes to reach the distant Boarding Gates.

By visiting the Airport Safety and Security section within this Fly Guide you'll find further information on the security checks you will pass through between the check-in desks and boarding the Aircraft.

Your Flight ...

Flights, especially long haul, can be boring and uncomfortable, especially when travelling with children and babies. The next few sections offers hints and advice on making your flight more bearable.

Hand luggage is essential so think about what yours will contain carefully. It's not just for your passport, ticket and cash.

Will you need prescribed medication during your flight, or decongestants if you've got a cold? Don't forget your sickness pills or wrist bands. Think about a change of top in case of delays, a good book, even a toothbrush to help freshen up.

Meals on a plane can be on the small side so think about having a bite to eat before hand. Also take some snacks in your hand luggage - you can buy snacks on the plane but the selection can be limited and expensive.

Pack a book, a magazine, even your stereo. Whilst long-haul flights normally play movies you might not like it or you've already seen it.

The cabin's pressure and atmosphere can cause swollen hands, feet and dry skin. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and limiting the amount of alcohol you intake. Carry some moisturiser to help prevent dry skin.

Take a warm jumper as you may get cold in the cabin (it can also be used as a pillow to help you get some sleep). Earplugs and an eye mask are good if you need darkness and quiet to sleep.

Chances are you've heard of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT). It's a serious condition where blood clots develop in the deep veins of the legs. Evidence states that long-haul flights, especially when passengers have little or no exercise, may increase the risk of developing DVT.

Try to make a conscious effort to walk around on the flight, especially if travelling long-haul. Make sure you wiggle your toes and do some simple leg stretches to try and get blood circulating.

For further information on DVT, like who is more at risk and how you can help prevent it, visit the Department of Health website - click here

  Staying Comfortable When Flying
  1. Upgrade Try asking for a complimentary upgrade to Business Class or First Class (do bear in mind you will need to look presentable).
  2. Front Row Seats A front row seat or a seat by an emergency exit will give you extra leg room.
3. Aisle Seats Aisle seats also offer a limited amount of space to stretch out.  An aisle seat also makes it easier for you to get up and down to stretch your legs, and means you can get out without having to climb over other sleeping passengers next to you.
4. Pillow Ask the cabin crew for a pillow, and even a blanket, to help you get some sleep. Or you can buy a blow up neck supporter pillow.

Ear plugs can also help to shut out some of the cabin noises so you can get to sleep easier.
5. Painful Ears Painful ears during take off or landing are very uncomfortable - try special ear plugs, like Earplanes, that equalise the air pressure on each side of the ear drum.
6. Dehydration Drink plenty of water during your flight and avoid alcohol so you stay hydrated. Pack some water.
7. Snacks Pack snacks for you and the family. Whilst you can buy food on board it can be limited and costly. Also, in-flight meals can be small.
8. Anxiety Flight anxiety is most unpleasant. Have you tried learning some simple breathing skills that you can use on the flight to reduce your stress and calm you down?  Sometimes activities like crosswords or a book can help take your mind off things.  If you think your anxiety is too intense, go and speak to your Doctor as he or she might be able to recommend something to help keep you calm before and during the flight.

Travelling with Children ...

When travelling with children be sure to pack some toys and games in your hand luggage for when you are waiting at the Airport, and for on the aircraft.

Colouring books and crayons, books and travel games are good to keep your children amused and don't weigh too much either. Toys and games that you can play with your child are ideal - Connect 4 and Snakes & Ladders are available in travel packs.

Activity packs are often issued by the Airline which can help too, but they won't entertain your child for a long flight.

If travelling with a young baby make sure you pack plenty of baby food or formula milk just in case of delays. Think about finger food and nibbles, do you need to sterilise?, if so cold water sterilising tablets. Include plenty of nappies, a dummy, a change of clothes in case of accidents and a blanket from home (with familiar smells) to wrap them up in to help them sleep. Also warm clothes as it can get very cold on a plane.

Travelling With Disabilities or Special Needs ...

Passengers will find that most Airlines are very well equipped to assist with disabilities or special needs.

Passengers with disabilities or special needs are advised to check that any special assistance required is included in the price of the ticket before booking. And to make sure the Airline is fully aware of any help you may need at the airport or on board.

Occasionally Airlines ask passengers to transfer to an airline wheelchair at check-in.  If you want to stay in your own wheelchair until boarding, double check with your airline if this is possible before you leave for the airport.

Vehicles for special assistance are available for travellers with disabilities. Do pre-book in advance of travel to prevent any delays in the airport.
