Here you will find detailed information on duty free allowances at Edinburgh Airport. Duty free at Edinburgh is available after the security check points, along with tax free shopping.

Your Duty Free Allowances ...

Duty free allowances at Edinburgh Airport depend on the Country you are travelling to. For those passengers flying outside of the EU, or International long haul, are entitled to duty free shopping that offer extra savings. Whilst those passengers travelling within the EU, or International long haul, can shop tax free.

Do take note of the UK Customs allowances along with those items that are prohibited and restricted from being brought into the UK from any destination.

Duty Free Allowances & The EU ...

Your duty free allowances at Edinburgh Airport offer additional savings to those travelling outside of the EU or International long haul. The below listed Countries (25) are currently in the European Union.

For those able to shop tax free - International long haul or within the EU, it's as if the Value Added Tax, currently 17.5%, has not been added. Normally both prices, before and after VAT, are displayed on the sales ticket.

Do be aware however, that tax may need to be paid on purchases when arriving at the final destination outside the EU, or when bringing the purchases back. Although goods such as those from bookstores, newsagents, pharmacies, duty paid items, etc. are excluded from any additional tax.

The Channel Islands and Gibraltar are part of the EU, however they are considered outside of the Community Customs territory so Customs allowances for outside the EU apply.

When shopping passengers should keep their boarding card with them as cards need to be presented to the cashier each time a purchase is made after security.

Why not check out the World Duty Free website (www.worlddutyfree.com) before travelling to see the full range of products available, including fragrances, beauty products, tobacco and alcohol available from the airport duty free.

Often, retailers use the World Duty Free shops to launch their new products before anywhere else in the World. This means you could be using the very latest in technology or wearing the newest fashions before they hit the high street.

For those International travellers flying into Edinburgh International Airport are also able to shop at the tax free World Shopping Arrivals store before they leave the security area within the Airport.  It holds a wide range of fragrances, cosmetics, electrical goods and duty paid alcohol and tobacco.

UK Customs Allowances ...

Your duty free allowances at Edinburgh Airport, and tax free allowances, will vary depending on your final destination.

When travelling from the EU into the UK, you are able to bring in the following goods without incurring customs duty:
  • 1 Litre of alcoholic beverages stronger than 22%, or 2 Litres of still table wine, or fortified or sparkling wine, or other liqueurs

  • 200 cigarettes, or 100 cigarillos, or 50 cigars, or 250g of tobacco

  • 50g of perfume and 250ml of toilet water

  • Other goods including souvenirs up to the value of £145

  • Goods obtained duty and tax paid in the EU are unlimited
Goods that are being brought into an EU Country that have already had tax paid will not be liable for additional tax or duty charges when entering the UK.

Strictly alcohol or tobacco products brought into the Country must be transported by the intended passenger and be for the passengers own use (i.e. own consumption and gifts).

Any goods - not just alcohol or tobacco - brought into the Country for resale or for payment of any kind, will be regarded as for commercial purpose.

If a Customs Officer has reason to suspect that the goods are being brought into the UK for a commercial use, the Officer will make a series of checks and ask questions on the load.

Questions include the type and quantity of goods that have been bought, why they were bought, how much was paid, how often the passenger travels, how much alcohol and tobacco the passenger normally consumes. Also taken into account is whether the goods look as though they have been concealed, or whether they have been visibly displayed

For examples, here is what Customs are likely to suspect if being imported:
  • 110 Litres of beer
  • 90 Litres of wine
  • 10 Litres of spirits
  • 20 Litres of fortified wine (i.e. port or sherry)
  • 3,200 cigarettes
  • 200 cigars
  • 400 cigarillos
  • 3kg tobacco
If it is decided that the goods are being imported for a commercial purpose, the goods are likely to be seized and not returned.  Likewise, if the goods are caught being sold. Illegal importing is a serious offence and could result in up to seven years in prison.

Like the UK, most Countries have their own laws on how much tobacco and alcohol you may take into their Country.  With some Countries requiring you to carry documents covering the goods. Do check with the Country’s Authorities when planning on buying larger amounts of alcohol or tobacco.

NOTE: Some EU Countries have their own special rules for cigarettes and some tobacco products:

  Special Restrictions
  Czech Republic 200 cigarettes, or
250g smoking tobacco, or
50 cigars, or
100 cigarillos
  Estonia 200 cigarettes, or
250g of smoking tobacco*
Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia & Slovenia 200 Cigarettes*
* From these Countries, there is no limit on other tobacco products as long as they are for the passengers own consumption.
